The Full Story
The Tour is a completely unique event, the first ever tour took place in 1981. Here, it ran for 20 years until its end in the millennium year. At this stage, runners would take on 4 varying races over 4 days, completing a double marathon in total.
Originally named The Tour of Tameside, the original event was the brainchild of Olympian Dr Ron Hill MBE. Each year The Tour of Tameside would welcome hundreds of runners, inviting international athletes to the Greater Manchester borough. Runners craved the Tour of Tameside in the years that it ceased to run and in 2015 it was adapted and revived as 'The Tour.' Decades on from its origin, The Tour remains as popular and as challenging and ever.
In 2024 The Tour was brought to you by Tameside Reporter, Glossop Chronicle, Oldham Reporter and Tameside Radio.

The Tour explores the very best scenery, trails and routes across Tameside, Oldham and Glossop. With the option to run or walk each route, volunteer to support the event, host a stall at our festival village or come along and cheer on runners, there’s something for all the community to get involved with, get active and enjoy.
Runners of all abilities can choose from four local routes or take on the full four-day back-to-back tour to experience a truly unique running challenge like no other! Runners will receive a bespoke medal for each race completed, with full tour finishers receiving a Tour finisher t-shirt for completing all four races.
